Vince Hackley, NIST

Vincent A. Hackley, Ph.D., is a Research Chemist and Leader of the Nanoparticle Measurements and Standards for Biomedical Applications and Health project in the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory (MESL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. He is also technical coordinator for the development of nanoscale particle reference materials and a principal investigator in the interagency collaboration between NIST and the National Cancer Institute’s Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory.

Dr. Hackley received a B.S. in Chemistry from the State University of New York and Syracuse University in 1983 and a PhD in Water Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1991. MSEL provides technical leadership for the nation's materials measurement and standards infrastructure. Expertise at MESL includes ceramics, polymers, metallurgy, neutron characterization, and materials reliability is used to anticipate and respond to industry needs in areas such as microelectronics, automotive, and health care, as well as to provide standard reference materials and develop measurement methods.

During a 17 year tenure at NIST, Dr. Hackley’s research activities have included a broad range of particle science & technology related efforts, including development of reference materials, standards committee work, terminology harmonization, and application of optical, x-ray and neutron scattering techniques to materials characterization. Dr. Hackley has over 60 publications to his credit, including two edited books and a NIST Recommended Practice Guide.
