Harald Krug, Ph.D., is Head of Materials-Biology Interactions Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA) since January 2007. In August 2008 he was appointed as “Titularprofessor” at the Medical Faculty, University of Berne. He has been Project Manager within the research program of Baden-Württemberg BWPLUS (http://bwplus.fzk.de/) since 1999, before which he was group leader at the KfK, Institute for Genetics and Toxicology of Nuclides and Head of Dep. of Molecular and Environmental Toxicology. He was appointed as the manager of the consortium "NanoCare", a research project of the German Ministry for Education and Research (http://www.nanopartikel.info) in 2006, and is a member of the Action Group “NanoDialog” of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). He is a member of the “Commission for Environmental Toxicology” of the Federal Office for the Environment (BAfU) of Switzerland and a member of the International Advisory Board of NANOTECH-Institut, Thailand (http://www.nanotec.or.th/en/).
Prof. Krug completed his first state examination in Biology/Chemistry at the University of Kassel (passed with distinction) in 1978, and obtained his doctoral degree at the University of Göttingen, Institute of Zoology (highest degree) in 1982. In 1996 he undertook his Habilitation “Umwelttoxikologie” at the University of Karlsruhe. He has been an academic member of the DECHEMA Working Group "Responsible Production and Use of Nanomaterials" since 2002, and a member of the Council of the European Academy for the Research on the Consequences of Scientific and Technological Advance (http://www.europaeische-akademie-aw.de ) since 2004.
Prof. Krug’s research interests include air pollution and nano-particles: effects on lung cells in culture; mechanisms of action of synthetic lipids including induction of apoptosis in tumour cells, and simultaneous temporal and spatial resolution of intracellular structural alterations during intoxication. He has published multiple articles and edited several books on the topic of nanotoxicology.
