Dale Porter, CDC/NIOSH

Dale Porter, Ph.D., is a Research Biologist in the Pathology and Physiology Research Branch in the Health Effects Laboratory Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Morgantown, West Virginia. He is also an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia. He is a member of the National Society of Toxicology, and served as President of the Allegheny-Erie Regional Chapter of the National Society of Toxicology from 2002-2003.


Dr. Porter received a B.S. in biology from Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1986, and also received the Robert E. Bugbee Award for his senior research project. He received a M.S. in agricultural biochemistry in 1988 and Ph.D. in genetics and developmental biology in 1992, both from West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia. His post-doctoral training was as a National Research Council Research Fellow (1992-1995) and National Cancer Institute Research Associate (1995-1996). In 1996, Dr. Porter received a research staff position at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Morgantown, West Virginia. He has served at this institution since that time.


Dr. Porter’s research interests have been concentrated in pulmonary toxicology and occupational lung disease at NIOSH. His current research projects are focused on the pulmonary toxicology of metal oxide nanoparticles and various types of carbon nanotubes. He has been a member of the Nanotoxicology Program in NIOSH since its inception. He is a co-author of six book chapters, over 70 abstracts and 50 manuscripts.
